Cultural Landscape Report & Master Plan

The Jaeger Company prepared a Cultural Landscape Report and Master Plan for the purpose of guiding future improvements to the Maclay State Park and Phipps Park, a combined 1800 acre open space in Tallahassee, Florida.

The Alfred B. Maclay State Gardens is as rich in natural beauty as it is in colorful history. Once a working plantation in the ante-bellum South, the property was donated to Florida in the 1950s. Twenty eight acres of gardens were designed by Maclay to complement the surrounding woodlands, while the majority of the site retains its natural character.

Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park has been developed for passive as well as active recreation. Over 500 acres within the park are blazed with multi-use trails which cross diverse natural areas such as swamp forests and pine groves.

The Jaeger Company created a Master Plan which integrates these significant properties while allowing each to retain its individual character. The Master Plan inventories, assesses, and documents natural and cultural resources, and prescribes management recommendations for structures, vernacular and designed landscapes and associated natural features.
