The
Jaeger Company assisted the Gwinnett County Department of Community
Services in the creation of a Master Plan to govern development
of Yellow River Park. Existing mountain bike and equestrian trails,
heavily used by local residents and regional visitors, currently
threaten park viability. Several complex issues confront the park
including a road bisecting the property; a lack of connectivity
to land across Yellow River from existing park trails; steep grades;
erosion along the river corridor due to trail proximity; user conflicts
along trails; and a desire to preserve existing wildlife habitats.
The
600-plus acre site contains a portion of the scenic Yellow River
and has a passive park use designation. Gwinnett County SPLOST revenues
will fund development efforts.
The
Jaeger Company met regularly with a steering committee and county
officials who helped guide park development plans. The final master
plan includes river overlooks, two amenity areas on either side
of the river with playgrounds, pavilions, restroom facilities, pedestrian
trails, updated bike and equestrian routes with adequate signage
for use identification, a multi-use trail close to the main pavilion
area; and a network of "pedestrian only" trails on one
side of the river. The
first phase of construction is currently under implementation by
Gwinnett County.
