Metropolitan
Atlanta is home to over 400,000 of Georgia's veterans. In response
to a need for additional burial sites, a 775-acre site in North
Georgia is being developed as the Georgia National Cemetery.
The
site is located in the mountains adjacent to Lake Allatoona between
Cartersville and Canton and offers panoramic views of the Blue Ridge
Mountains and Lake Allatoona.
The
Jaeger Company, as part of the design team, will assist in the master
planning and preliminary design phases in the development of this
site. The master plan guides the first phase, which will include
an entrance area, information center, administration and maintenance
building, public restrooms, flag plaza, shelters for committal services,
and site work such as roadway and irrigation systems.
The
Department of Veterans Affairs expects to open the new cemetery
for burials in early 2004.
The
Jaeger Company is responsible for the planting design element of
the project. The intent is to retain the native plant communities
existing on the site and to use an exclusively indigenous palette
in re-landscaping the more formal areas of the site.
