The Jaeger Company updated an earlier
master plan and prepared construction documents for the City of
Athens to guide aesthetic and functional improvements in the downtown
central business district. Adjacent to The University of Georgia,
downtown Athens features distinct zones - governmental center, entertainment
and dining area, and historic retail district - which together create
a vibrant central business district.
Funded by SPLOST (Special Purpose
Local Option Sales Tax) and currently nearing completion, this project
will provide a safer, more aesthetically pleasing environment for
pedestrians in the busy downtown area while upgrading vital infrastructure
elements such as water and sewer lines.
The project has included the following
improvements: (1) replacement of existing sidewalks, using primarily
brick pavers in many locations; (2)widening and addition of crosswalks
using special pavement treatments at major intersections (3)enhancement
of the landscape using native trees as well as traditional species
such as the Ginkgo; (4) improvement of the growing environment for
street trees using a structural soil mix; and (5) addition of pedestrian-scale
street lighting.
