Cultural Landscape Report

The Jaeger Company under an on-call services agreement with the National Park Service has developed a Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) for Moton Field, the training site for the Tuskegee Airmen, our nation's first squadron of African-American pilots. Situated in Tuskegee, Alabama, and closely associated with the historically black college of Tuskegee Institute, the site was developed in the early 1940s and used intensively during the war years. The site was more or less abandoned after the war with only intermittent uses, including scientific studies by the Institute as well as the development of a municipal airport by the City of Tuskegee on a portion of the property. The section of the site associated with the Airmen, "Moton Field," was recently acquired by the NPS with plans to restore it to its appearance during the war years for use as an interpretive historic site for the public.

The landscape analysis has included detailed site inspections as well as historic a research. Information has been obtained through interviews with surviving Airmen as well as the Institute's landscape architect who managed the site following the war. The CLR and its recommended treatments are being used as the basis for a future master plan and construction documents.

Historic Structures Reports

The firm was part of a multi-disciplinary team charged with documenting the existing conditions as well as the site's history. Detailed analysis of the twelve extant buildings included a physical assessment as well as documenting the evolution of each structure, including construction dates and any alterations made during the life of the structure. The firm is also documented buildings that have been lost as components in the future interpretive program for the site.
