The
Jaeger Company provided Preservation Planning, Architectural History,
and Historical Landscape Architectural services in the development
of a master plan for Georgia College in Milledgeville. The firm served
as subconsultant to the prime master planning firm by providing an
assessment of cultural resources. Georgia law requires state agencies
to consider responsible treatment and management options for historic
properties in their ownership.
The
firm carried out a campus-wide survey of historic resources (buildings
and landscape features constructed prior to 1949) and assessed each
to determine its eligibility for the National Register of Historic
Places. The firm extended the historic date to 1960 for future planning
purposes. The buildings' original design was identified and evaluated
against past changes. Buildings with integrity (limited changes
to the original character) were determined as significant. The firm
provided project architects with an evaluation of significant buildings,
including important interior spaces. The scale, materials, and details
of the historic buildings and landscape elements were considered
as recommendations were made for the overall master plan.
As
part of the University System of Georgia, the institution followed
a master planning process using a template applied statewide. This
is one of the first master plans to be produced following guidelines
from the State Stewardship legislation.
